Hospital celebrates 50th birthday
Lakes District Health Board is planning to celebrate Taupo¯ Hospital’s 50th birthday on Thursday, October 21, with a celebratory afternoon tea. The actual 50 years milestone fell on September 25, but alert level changes helped organisers decide to push the celebration out a month. It was September 50 years ago that Taupo¯ Hospital opened, as a 25-bed unit. The ward served as a surgical, medical and geriatric unit, with the first patient admitted in November 1971. A second ward was completed five years later, at which time the first ward opened became the Surgical Ward, with Ward 2 becoming the Medical Ward. In those days Taupo¯ general practitioners provided the anaesthetic needs of the hospital. Lakes District Health Board is keen to hear from locals who worked at Taupo¯ Hospital in its early years, or received services there.
