The vigorously contested Men v Women competition was held on a gloriously fine day on Sunday, June 19 at Waihi Golf Club. While the number of players was down this year, mainly due to a clash of dates, it did not diminish the determination of those involved, and was a most enjoyable event. The trophy was decided by the average scores of each gender, and the winners for 2022 were the women’s team by an average of 1.40 strokes. The top score for the ladies was Carol Leary (36) and Jill Morrison (35), while John Saunders (36) and Ken Purcell (34) were the best of the men. VETS: With the past two weeks rained off, 27 members braved the elements to try and qualify for the vet’s matchplay competition. The haggle of the day was stableford with the scoring reflecting the conditions. The best score was a 34 recorded by Tim Parish, followed by Jim Evans, and Bruce Rutter, both with 33, and John Purkis (32), and then five others on 31. The 9-hole section held their 9-Hole Invitational on Tuesday, with a great field of 50 women and 18 men. Joining the Waihi players were entries from Walton, O¯ tu¯ moetai, Hauraki, Thames, Whangamata¯, Te Aroha, and Tairua. The stableford division¯ 1 women, was won by Denise Bax (Otu¯ moetai) with a great 23 points. The division 2 winner was Waihi’s Denise Morgan with an impressive 19 stableford points. The men’s division was won by local golfer Terry Paterson with a great 21 points. WEDNESDAY LADIES: On a cold, windy morning the ladies held a net haggle, but frequent cold showers resulted in 30 per cent of the field retiring to warmer climes. Of the hardy finishers, Jill Morrison led the way with 73 nett, with Carol Leary next on 74 as well as Wendy Matutinovich on 75 and Dot Ramsey 76. The Dreamers Player of the Week was Jill Morrison. THURSDAY MEN: A better day saw a good size field for the morning haggle. First in division 1 was Brian Baynes, on a countback from Earle White with 38 points. Next was Allen Sarjant with 35. In division 2, Jock Stronach was top with 37 points, followed by (Mr Reliable), Tom Rowbotham 36. Jim Evans, and John Saunders both had 35. In the afternoon haggle Mark Hume was first with 38 points, followed by Kelly Exelby, and Mark Tomsett with 36. Next were Terry Gerbich, and Graeme Parkinson with 34 points. SATURDAY LADIES: Saturday ladies played a nett haggle. For the second week in a row, Martine Milicich had the best score, along with Phillipa Harvey, who both had 71 nett scores. Next was Carol Leary with 73. SATURDAY MEN: It was a qualifying round for the Flett Cup, but the haggles were on stableford.
