Active search for Tararua social housing

NEWS

Wairarapa MP Kieran McAnulty last week announced a further step in getting Government social housing back to the Tararua District. On Tuesday, May 27, he said: “At the last election I said that if elected as MP for Wairarapa then bringing back Kainga Ora (Housing NZ) would be my number one priority. “It doesn’t matter how many doors you knock on as a list MP, it never carries quite as much weight as an electorate MP. “And so for the past six months I have made it clear to the Housing Minister and Kainga Ora that bringing back Government social housing is an absolute necessity for our region.” Since 1999, when all Government social housing in the Tararua District was sold off, there has been no Government social housing provider like Kainga Ora in the region. “The housing crisis is not of this government’s making, however it is our job to fix it,” McAnulty said. “This sort of thing doesn’t happen overnight, but we’ve made good progress in the past six months. I am in active discussions with Kainga Ora about a number of opportunities in our region at the moment, and I am on the lookout for more. “Ka¯ inga Ora have confirmed to me that there are now two full-time staff members dedicated to securing opportunities for building social houses in the Tararua District. “Their responsibility is to actively pursue development opportunities in our region,” he said. “This is a significant step towards getting social houses built in our region. And to speed things up even more I am asking for the community to help. “I am keen to hear about any suitable opportunity for new social housing and champion good proposals to Kainga Ora. Just get in touch with my office.”
